National park "Risnjak"
National Park "Risnjak" is the most wooded part of Gorski Kotar. It's away from the Adriatic Sea only 15 kilometers and it is only 15 kilometers northeast of the city of Rijeka. Top big Risnjak is 1528 m above sea level and is considered one of the most beautiful in Croatia. The main entrance to the park is located next to the Board NP Risnjak, where is also situated National Park and a beautiful little pond with ducks residents. To a chalet at the foot of the peak, takes a few marked hiking trails, such as "Leska", "Horvatova staza", etc. Horvatova staza is geological structure massif in this area and has developed a variety of herbs which is most endemic "edelweiss." Because of the numerous and undiscovered, caves, cave and karst sinkhole Risnjak is a haven for cavers and biologists. Risnjak inhabited by many animal species, most of which are protected. In addition to bear and gray wolf, lynx is especially notable by which Risnjak probably got its name. Risnjak is also the habitat of over 60 species of birds.
In 1997. Park area has been extended to an area of 6350 hectares, and in addition to the central part of the massif Risnjak includes the mountain range and Snjeznik hydro natural monument - the source of the Kupa river together with its upper course, which is realized desire by prof. Ivo Horvat for the protection and valorization of the region.
